...except _all_ the software I've seen using FodTrack directly accesses the
port, and so will only work with a 'physical' standard port which is
directly on the PC bus. FodTrack itself relies on the correct twiddling of
the right bits (status and data) on the port, which often isn't an available
function on the virtual LPT ports you refer to.

Indeed I've had to modify some of the software so I can use it under NT/W2K
which objects to some direct port I/O.

I've been in the market for just this type of unit in the past, but have
been put off in the past by the prices - what sort of prices and what are
the models that you're referring to?

There are several boxes floating around that provide parrallel and/or serial
ports via a LAN.  I am using one as switch and firewall in my home.  I would
assume hooking a FODtrack up to this shared port would be fairly straight
forward.
