Re: AOR AR5000 sensitivity on S-band

Hi Jens

I have the AR-5000 and my intention is to use it for S Band RX.

Unfortunately I find the AR-5000 almost useless here in Central London on 2m
and 70cm for satellite work as the front end cannot cope with pagers and
trunk radio, even with DCI bandpass filters connected. This is a problem as
I was hoing to use the variable IF bandwidths of the AR-5000 as a
UO-36/Tiungsat downlink.

Hopefully S-Band will be a lot better or I have made an expensive mistake!

I'll be trying this weekend (weather permitting) portable with the AR-5000
and a 20 turn helix (without a preamp unless they are delivered today!),
although I'm not sure how good the helix is.

I have on order a couple of S band preamps: an SSB unit and a DB6NT unit.
I'll let you know how I get on when I get them hooked up. The SSB SP-13 has
T/R switching, gain of 25dB and a 1.2dB noise figure. The DB6NT unit is the
MKU232A2 which is 35dB/0.7dB but has no T/R switch. The MKU232A2 also has a
23cm notch filter built in to protect it from an L band uplink.
