TiVO (www.tivo.com) has done something similar. It's a video recorder
that uses an array of hard disks for storing compressed video. It's
powered by Linux, and it's targeted for home use.

Especially if it controlled the brakes on your car, a life-support
system, or a nuclear power plant within harm's distance. VERY scary! :-O
