Not at all strange!

I'd be interested to know if you get to know where to poke inside the radio
to get an external 9600 modem to work too.

Answer regarding WISP and TH-D7 on its own is yes it does work. On receive
only though. I just tried it on a TH-D7E MK2 on TO-31. You have to switch to
HBAUD 9600 first manually though, setting the WISP software to TNC-2.

You'll have trouble making it work fully on three counts:

(a) Overrun errors on 9600 computer data rate & no hardware handshake.
(b) Very limited (single AX25 frame) packet buffer on D7.
(c) It won't TX cross band full duplex. Don't know if the D7A(G) supports
this in KISS mode. I know there's an option for cross band TNC but whether
it's supported in KISS I don't know. But still no full duplex.
