The sub-band is supposedly a completely separate receiver (and it's AM/FM
only, too). You can apparently work full duplex using the usual
transmitter/receiver, just like on the FT-847, which should include
mode A as well. The sub-receiver is for local repeaters, packet cluster
etc.
Not that I've ever seen one ...
