AMSAT Strategy Workshop Announcement

The Future is Now: AMSATís Strategy Workshop

All AMSAT members are invited to participate in a workshop that will be held
at the upcoming 18th AMSAT Annual Meeting and Space Symposium in Portland,
Maine. The two-hour workshop will begin at 10:00 AM, Sunday, 29 October 2000
and will solicit membersí input into the development of a post-Phase 3D
AMSAT strategy.

Over the past year, a team of AMSAT members has been involved in the
difficult task of identifying and analyzing a variety of issues that need to
be resolved in order to develop a sound and viable strategy for AMSAT.
Presently, the Strategy Team is at a point where AMSAT membersí review and
comment on their progress would be of enhanced value. After considering
membersí comments, the Strategy Teamís efforts will be presented to the
AMSAT Board of Directors for final review, comment, and adoption. An adopted
strategy would allow AMSAT to better focus its limited financial and
technical resources on what directions, and resulting projects, it considers
of value to the organization.

Please note that the outcome of this workshop and resulting strategy is not
to identify which particular satellite projects to undertake, rather over
the next few years, what direction(s) do we need to take that would foster
such projects?

At the workshop, the strategy team will present their efforts to date for
memberís review and comment including the presentation and discussion of
several issues that effect the direction of an AMSAT strategy such as:

- State of AMSAT

- Available membership capabilities and resources to implement strategy.

- The challenge of Phase 3D and resulting dividends

- ARISS status

- University and other organization LEO Amateur Radio satellite construction

- Partnering with fellow AMSAT organizations

- Need to foster experimentation

Upon presentation of these issues, several strategy options will be
presented for review and comment by participants. The floor will also be
open for members to present and/or comments on any additional strategy
proposals. Certainly the ability to effectively obtain comments from a
two-hour workshop participants is a large and difficult task. Inasmuch,
workshop participants will be allowed until 15 November 2000 to submit any
additional comments and thoughts on the AMSAT strategy.

A summary of the workshop will be published in The AMSAT Journal. Those
members who cannot attend the workshop are welcomed to send their thoughts
and comments on an AMSAT strategy to k5nrk@amsat.org no later than 15
October 2000. You are also welcomed to provide your written or oral comments
via any AMSAT member who will attend the workshop.
