Actually, Opal works just fine.  Students at Stanford are performing
experiments on COTS testbeds as well as studying the performance of the
bus.  It's half duplex at 437.1 MHz and 9600 baud.  It also outputs a time
stamped beacon and a "morse code like" beacon.  There are nulls in the
antenna pattern that occasionally produce fades in the signal but a
typical oscar station can pick up Opal.
