USB and FireWire

FireWire would be an excellent selection.  Then you could take you camera or
VCR and attach it to the FireWire bus for transmission via SSTV, etc .. as
well as get a higher speed bus.  USB does have a distance limitation as a
passive device.

Support for legacy could be through off the shelf USB - RS-232 or we could
build devices such as CI-V to USB with the same off the shelf ICs . (Now
here is a project ! )

BTW, contest operators alone should be able to finance a standard such as
FireWire.  Many attempts now are trying to connect all radios in a
multioperator configuration to a common network bus.
