Use a set of headphones.  Works for me every time.  Some rigs may need an
external mic, when using a headset, but that depends on the rig and the
cabling.  As I use separate rigs, that one isn't an issue for me, and even
if I used my Alinco in crossband mode, I can still use the internal mic with
the phones in (I've done that for terrestrial work).

The Mode J birds (oh, SO-35 will be running J this weekend too) are easier
to get into, so FD is not as important there...
