Recomendations

Hi Don...

>>I would welcome recommendations for handheld radio to work the FM birds. One
that works full duplex cross band. I plan to use an Arrow antenna and try my
luck with a whip antenna also.<<

Basically, I agree with the comment that almost any dual band full duplex HT
will do the job. I've used my Alinco DJ580T, 19 in. flexible whip and 5
watt battery pack with some success on overhead passes of both UO-14 and
AO-27. AO-27 is difficult to hear on my HT, but I have been able to make
contacts on occasion.

I've read some messages saying full dux is not really essential for the FM
birds, but I think, with a whip or duckie, it's really nice to hear yourself
and know when you're getting through and when you're wasting your breath. <s>

The only limitation of the DJ-580T is that it does not transmit between 430
and 440 Mhz without modification, which makes it unsuitable for use with
SO-35's 436.291 Mhz uplink. The "mod." is supposed to be straightforward for
the technically inclined, though.

So, if you find a 5 watt class dual band, full dux, HT that transmits on
the full 430-450 band right out of the box, I'm interested. <s>
