Re: Recomendations

Don,

I went through an exhaustive search for HTs. And while satellite work
wasn't my only requirement, it was an important one.

Make sure it will tx/rx in the 430MHz range! Now you'd think this would be
a no brainer but it isn't. Some don't go below 440Mhz. Most can be
modified, but the manufacturer doesn't guarantee the performance below 440.

Other desirables (and this is my personal list): A BNC connector for
quick/easy change of antennas; standard earphone connector (1/8" mono plug
not the 4-conductor thingy), wide receive capability (30-1,200Mhz), WFM and
AM modes as well as NFM, 5watt output, a simple UI including 1 button
start/stop scan, and modest size-not micro but not large either.

Obviously, I had to make a compromise. I couldn't get it all. Cost was
also a factor. After much searching, and trying a new radio for a while.
I settled on a used (also out of production) Yaesu FT-51.

It's no easy choice. You've just got to line up your priorities and decide
what's most important. If you're an ARRL member you can look up product
reviews on-line. Other sites carry reviews as well. But you can't beat
going to a store and playing with the various ones. Make a chart of the
features YOU want. Rank them as to priority and then start researching. I
wouldn't discount single receivers, as long as they'll do split mode (tx on
one band, rx on another). All depends on your pocket book and priorities.
