RE: FD, VX5R, FM38-39

I have a Alinco DJ-G5 and it is similar to the Yaesu VX5R.

I am also using the arrow antenna which is very good.

It's takes a bit of getting used to but once you over come that its very
exciting.

I would also like to get a decent vertical antenna 2m/70cm
for sat operation.

Cheers

Good evening. I worked about 8 or so stations on FD from Albuquerque
NM. I worked 2 station's Saturday night on SO-35 from my Hotel room
window! The rest I worked enroute on Sunday. All it takes is a little
luck, patience, and experience. I liked the challenge myself.
On the Yaesu VX5R , I think this is the best handheld satellite radio
currently on the market. I've had a FT51R, VX1R, and a D7. The rx is
about the same all around , but the 5R is the easiest to tune for
Doppler. All you have to do is set up the radio in VFO split mode(pg 21),
simply set the step to 5k on both bands, then you can adjust Doppler
through the pass by just changing the freq by 5k, to adjust the U/L you
can also swap VFO's with only 1 keystroke! Different satellite? just
direct key enter the freqs. Just go back to MR mode for repeater access,
leaving the VFO's intact. By far much easier to use, then the rest. I
didn't ever see the FT51's fulldup mode useful. Just got a used VR-500
for Fathers day, used it on FD also to rx, was great having the .05k step
resolution available! But I think the rx isn't as good as the 5R.
Tomorrow I will be out in the Atlantic Ocean fishing for Tuna with
n2lmd, and kb2qrm. I will be in grids FM39, and FM38. I will be active on
all morning voice FM bird's, provided the fish aren't biting...
