Re: VX5R and arrow antenna help

Hi Chris,

My name is Jerry KK5YY and perhaps I can be of some help.

Currently I believe MIR is unmanned and thus quiet. I would recommend
trying to hear AO-27 or UO-14 either should be easily heard on the
Arrow.

For AO-27 start listening on 436.805 just as it comesover the horizon.
Shift down 5 KHz at a time as needed to keep the signal clear as the
bird passes over and goes away.

For UO-14 start at 435.080 and shift down as above.

There a a couple of drawbacks to using any of the FT-50/VX-1/VX-5
class radios. First since they are not truely dual band radios you
cannot hear your own downlink. This is not too great a limitation
for the experienced operator but does present an unneeded
hurdle to the new operator.

The firmwear design does not support easily changing the downlink
frequency while maintaining an uplink frequency but it does
support crossband memories. I have found the easiest way to
set up this class of radios is to program a series of memories to
accomodate the Doppler shift.

If you need more help drop me a note.
