Hi Stan,
As Lee mentioned, Full Duplex is the key.
I have _very_ temporarily used an IC706 (which like the FT100 is only half
duplex) and a multimode Yaesu VR500 handheld RX to hear my downlink on
RS12/13 and FO20. Sort of worked, in that I could hear my own downlink, but
the VR500 really suffered badly with intermod from local strong signals.
I tried this because I felt the FT847 was too big for regular portable
operation.
You also may have another radio (RX only) which you could use for the
downlink.
I guess I'm spoilt with the FT847.
