Forgive me if this has already been mentioned, I came into this
discussion a bit late...

It's not strange at all.  I don't know how things are in your neck of
the woods; every country has different rules.  Here in the states, we
are issued an 'operator' and a 'primary station' license combined in
one document.  The F.C.C. authorized amateur callsign is actually
assigned to the _primary_station_, not the operator.  Therefore, in the
USA, no amateur radio operator has a callsign, only their physical
stations do.  It's all spelled out in Part 97, but I don't want to bore
you...  :-)
