1. Drive a stake into the ground at around noon (not at all critical).
2. Adjust the stake angle to eliminate any shadow.
3. Wait 15-30 minutes. The shadow will point EXACTLY east.
This is an old trick from the Boy Scout Handbook, circa 1969.
