Clive,
Try HyperTerminal, which is standard on Win 95/98. It's a pretty poor
excuse for a terminal program, but at least it will do what you need.
You'll find it under Start Button-Programs-Accessories-Hyperterminal.
It is pretty easy to write a comm program in Visual Basic using the MSComm
library.
