http://www.amsat.org has a few articles which you should find useful.

G3RUH has some good advice in one of his articles available there
http://www.amsat.org/amsat/articles/g3ruh/101.txt:

(I quote part of the article here)
Experience shows that the absolute minimum
acceptable 2 meter RX antenna is an 8 XY yagi or equivalent. With this
you should be able to hear the beacon (q.v.) well at optimum squint
(q.v.). Ideally however you should try and have twice as much antenna
as
this, to allow a good margin in hand (10 XY, 2x17 ele etc).

An article by GM4IHJ located at
ftp://ftp.amsat.org/amsat/articles/satgen/sgen391.txt will give you an
idea of the dynamics at work on the bird. Although the information is
from 1996, the science still applies.

Spend some time reading the articles on the AMSAT NA site. There is a
wealth of information available for most of the available satellites.
Start your quest at the articles page:
http://www.amsat.org/amsat/articles/articles.html and navigate from
there.
