Another Packet Meteor Opportunity



W2EV has suggested the following simple method for running PACKET
Meteor Scatter (Jan 2-4 Quads) for stations without APRS..  For the next
two nights, consider setting up your packet station as you go to bed and
leave it on all night to see what you collect by noon the next day:

Freqs 145.79 MHz (2 day test ONLY!  This is the future Mir/ISS freq!)
       53.53 MHz (PropNet Freq (uses APRS to see band openings)

For those with KPC3's with ROM 8.2 or above... or PacComms of 4.0 or
better do RESTORE command to get back to factory defaults.  The
following are KPC3 specific, but similar commmands will set up the
PacComm TNC's.

1)  Do the autobaud to get your baudrate set...
2)  Enter your MYCALL
3)  Enter INTFACE TERM   <-- for KPC3's)
4)  CD SOFTWARE
5)  DAY YYMMDDHHMM <--ENTER DATE AND TIME FOR PROPER LOGGING
6)  CMSG DISC
7)  HEADERLN OFF
8)  HID OFF
9)  MXMIT OFF
10) LT 1 [FN03XD]        <--PLACE YOUR GRID SQUARE LOCATOR here 
11) LTP CQ VIA TRACE1-1  <--Sets your digi path via TRACE
12) UITRACE TRACE,1      <-Causes ur TNC to digi others & insert ur call
                         (In a Paccomm set MYAlias to TRACE1-1)
13  BLT 1 00:00:05  <-- CAUSEs YOUR STATION TO SEND ONCE EVERY 5-SECONDS

The following will happen:
Once every 5-seconds, your TNC will send a packet with your gridsquare in
APRS format so you will automatically show up on APRS maps.  If any other
similarly configured station hears your packet, it will SUBSTITUE its
MYCALL in place of your TRACE digipeater field so that you can see WHO
heard you and digipeated it BACK via the same Meteor burn!  You will need
to keep a dumb terminal program running to capture any such responses.  

And/Or a simple MHEARD will provide you with a list of the last 10 DX
callsigns copied (or local if you have others in your area playing,
too).

All previous APRS meteor scatter tests have assumed blind transmissions
and hopeful QSL's after the fact.  This idea by Ev, takes advantage of the
instant digipeat and CALLSIGN-SUBSTITUTION of the current KPC3 and PacComm
APRS compatible TNC's so that you will see YOUR OWN SUCCESSES in real time
and you will know WHAT station digipeated you!  Neat idea Ev!

If you dont have one of these modern TNC's, then you wont digipeat anyone,
but you can still do it and others may see you and QSL here...  And you
may capture some packets too.

METEOR SCATTER works best with high power and beams.  Point your beam at
the horizon towards a major population area about 600 to 1000 miles away.
You WILL capture something if others are playing.  During the Leonids,
over 37 stations copied over 48 such packets over paths of 600 to 1100
miles.
