I'm not sure what the difference is between the two.  Perhaps the B is a
somewhat newer model?  I bought mine (a 1278B) new in 1993 and added the
9600 baud modem option a couple of years later.  They work fine on the 9600
pacsats.  I do recall talking to someone once who had a 1278B and rigged it
with a 9600 modem and a 2400 PSK modem and a switch to select between them.
