[Headline] Ukrainian Sea Launch of US Satellite Moved to March '99
Moscow ITAR-TASS in English 0620 GMT 24 Sep 98
[By Veronika Romanenkova]
MOSCOW, September 24 (Itar-Tass) -- The first liftoff from the international
floating
cosmodrome Sea Launch is shifted from this autumn to March 1999. It is planned
to put into orbit a space mockup instead of a real satellite, deputy general
designer of the Energiya space corporation Valeriy Aliev said in an interview
with Itar-Tass here on Thursday [24 September].
The first reason for the delay is unreadiness of the American satellite
Galaxy-11 which was to be fired off from the Sea Launch. The thing is that the
previous blastoff of Galaxy-10 was abortive, and the manufacturer of the
spacecraft, the American Hughes company, decided to improve the spacecraft.
Thus, cancelling a fireoff from the Sea Launch this year, Hughes intends to
order two launches in 1999, Aliev noted.
According to the deputy general designer, specialists are now engaged in
selecting a demonstration mockup, which is no less difficult than a choice of
a real satellite.
