There is a little-known utility included with Windows to back up long
filenames (LFNBK.EXE if memory serves...).  It can be used to preserve
long filenames in 8.3 transfer scenarios.  Like most uSoft products, it
doesn't always work right, but it's there....

Also, look for a program called ERU on your Windows 95 CD.  Use it. 
Use it often.  It will save your...  er, sanity.  Why Microsoft doesn't
tell people about this utility is beyond me.  I've confirmed that the
Win95B version of ERU works with Win98, as they apparently didn't deem
it necessary to include ERU with Win98....
