If you will be satisfied to expand the UHF coverage to 420-450 (for the
satellite band, etc.), all you need to do is remove the small plastic plug
on the side of the case, pull out the small board inside and clip the
green wire which will be exposed.  Replace the board and the plug and
reset the cpu by holding down the f key and turning the unit on.

If you want more expansion than that, you will need to move around some
VERY SMALL diodes inside the TH-79A.  There is a pretty good list of mods
on http://www.hamrad.com.  Follow the links and you will find them.  One
of the files there is very large and consists of scanned pages from what
would appear to be a Kenwood document.  It covers all versions of the
TH-79 and shows the possible mods (800 MHz is not possible on the TH-79A,
except for the earliest models).
