The Dayton Hamvention 2004 will be held this year on 14 through 16 May 2004. As has been the case for the last several years Hamvention will be at the Hara Arena Complex on the north side of Dayton. Further information on Hamvention 2004, including advance ticket sales and motel accommodations can be found at www.hamvention.org.
AMSAT has a block of rooms reserved at the Hampton Inn in Beavercreek. Please contact Martha (email@example.com) at the AMSAT office for room price and availability for Hamvention. The phone number for the AMSAT office is +1(301)589-6062. Other hotels in the immediate area of the Hampton Inn include the Fairfield Inn and the Homewood Suites if additional accommodations are needed.
AMSAT members who stayed at the Homewood Suites will be familiar with the area. If you are east bound on Col Glenn Hwy turn right on the road between the Taco Bell and Bob Evan's Restaurant. Proceed through the 4 way stop and the motel is on the left hand side at the end of the road. There are several local restaurants in the shopping area in front of the motel and about 1 mile away at the Fairfield Commons Mall. Contact Martha at the AMSAT office for reservations for the motel. The GPS coordinates are listed below.
Again this year the Upper Valley ARC has given AMSAT permission to use their repeater system (call is N8GTE) during Hamvention. The 2 meter repeater is on 145.41 - .6 MHz with a PL tone of 118.8 Hz. There is a UHF repeater (call N8GTE) available on 442.375 +5.00 MHz with a PL tone of 118.8 Hz. These repeaters are within a mile of the AMSAT hotel site. Reception of the repeater between the Hamvention site and the motel is possible on either repeater.
The US Air Force Museum is currently celebrating the 100th Anniversary of the first manned flight by the Wright Brothers. There are over 350 military aircraft on display at the AF Museum. Further information on the US Air Force Museum can be found at www.wpafb.mil/museum; admission is free and the museum is open to the public from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM on weekdays.
The IMAX Theater at the Air Force Museum will be showing "Space Station" during week of Hamvention. The movie is approximately 42 minutes long and has about 3 minutes showing amateur radio operations on board the space station. AMSAT and the ARRL sponsor the school contacts with the space station in conjunction with NASA. Show times for the IMAX movie are 11:00 AM and 3:00 PM daily. This is an excellent opportunity to see "Space Station" on the IMAX curved screen.
For advance ticket sales call Terry Aitken or Mary Bruggeman at +1(937)253-4629 or contact them via e-mail at firstname.lastname@example.org or email@example.com. The Third Annual AMSAT "Pizza 'n' Suds" party will be held again this year at Marion's Pizza at 1320 North Fairfield Rd. The party will begin at 1830 and go until the last pizza is gone! Food will be ordered from the menu and drinks (beer, sodas and iced tea) are available at the bar. Directions and coordinates are listed below.
Last year's event was well attended with over 60 satellite enthusiasts at the party. If you plan to attend please contact Dave Misek (N8NPX) in advance at N8NPX@ARRL.NET and let him know how many will be in your group. We have 100 seats reserved for the party.
From the Hampton Inn go to Col Glenn Highway and turn right. Go approximately 1/8 mile to the intersection with N Fairfield Rd and turn right and head south 3.7 miles. Fairfield Rd and old state Rt. 35, there is a Sunoco gas station on your left and a Friendly's Ice Cream store across the street. Marion's is directly behind the Friendly's store. Go through the intersection and turn left into the shopping center. Marion's Pizza is on the left and slightly up hill as you make the turn.
From the downtown Dayton area follow US Route 35 East toward Xenia. Exit at North Fairfield Rd and go north about 0.7 of a mile and turn right into the shopping center. Marion's will be on the left-hand side and slightly up hill as you enter the shopping center.
APRS users should look for N8NUY-10 as a beacon. The coordinates for Marion's Pizza are listed below.
